How I Started My Fashion Brand with No Qualifications
From Pinterest to Production:
I never had formal training.
I didn’t go to fashion school.
And I definitely didn’t know how to sew.
But I always loved fashion. Feminine, romantic pieces — like those dreamy collections from Chloé — really spoke to me. Soft silhouettes, puff sleeves, delicate cotton, floaty dresses… I was obsessed. I didn’t know how, but I knew I wanted to create something like that.
Pinterest: My Unexpected Mentor
When I first started dreaming about my own brand, Pinterest became my best friend. I’d spend hours saving looks I loved — ruffles here, a sleeve detail there, the perfect neckline. I started creating mood boards and then piecing them together, pulling inspiration from different sources to create something that felt like “me.”
It was messy. It was intuitive. It was fun.
My First Touch of Fabric
The first time I truly interacted with fabric was when I traveled to India. That trip opened my eyes. I discovered hand-block printing, beautiful textures, and the richness of cotton I’d never felt before. It was magical.
Something clicked. This wasn’t just a holiday anymore — this was the beginning.
Creating Without Experience
I didn’t know what I was doing.
I didn’t have a tape measure.
I guessed everything.
And yes — there were disasters.
I started contacting makers on Etsy, and a few agreed to help me turn my ideas into real pieces. I described designs using reference images and sketches. They created samples and shipped them to me while I was still travelling in 2024.
Some pieces were too small. Others were oddly shaped. But every mistake taught me something.
Meeting the Makers in India
When I finally arrived back in India, I got to meet the talented artisans I’d been working with from afar. It felt surreal.
Even with language barriers, we found ways to understand each other — through hand gestures, laughter, and shared vision. These were people who had been sewing their whole lives. Their skill blew me away.
Together, we created my very first collection.
It wasn’t perfect — but it was ours.
Building KLC Studio
From those first samples to launching KLC Studio, every step has been a leap of faith. I didn’t start with knowledge. I started with passion.
And that passion is stitched into every piece I design.
If you’re someone who’s dreaming but doubting — know this: you don’t need all the answers to start. You just need to begin.
